Lake Herman Road (5/28/16): Part 1

A turnout on Lake Herman Road in the city of Benicia is the location of what is considered the first murders committed by the Zodiac Killer in the San Francisco Bay Area.

On the night of December 20, 1968, the bodies of David Arthur Faraday, 17, and Betty Lou Jensen, 16, were found on what was, then, a lover’s lane, just off Lake Herman Road. Both had died from gunshot wounds. There were no witnesses and a passing motorist saw the scene and alerted the police.

On August 1, 1969, several Bay Area newspapers received the first letter from the killer in which he claimed responsibility for the 12/20/68 murders. (The newspapers called him the “Zodiac Killer,” because in the letter, the killer had included a cyptogram that he claimed would, when solved, name the identity of the killer.)

A group of us visited the turnout on May 28, 2016 in the late afternoon. The 2-lane road is somewhat busy and you’ll hear the occasional car going by. There was also a gentle wind blowing and you’ll hear the fluttering sound it leaves on a digital recorder. There were 6 of us who conducted 3 different EVP sessions over 34.30 minutes.

Examination of my recording reveals a number of odd noises (which were not heard at the time of the recording) and possible EVPs. I have posted the clips of these sounds in this 3-part blog post.

Clip 1: You’ll hear Chris and Mike talking in the background, along with a slamming sound that was made when Mike closed his car door. As Mike talks, there’s an unclear whispering at the 2 second mark. I hear what may be, “Go ahead and jump them.”

Clip 2: Mike asks if the spirits remember him from a visit he made last year. There is a single knock heard near us at the 5 second mark. The knock could be a response to Mike’s question.

Clip 3: Cindy asks if one of the murder victims is present and, if so, to let us know. At the 5 second mark, there is a knock, followed by what may be a male voice saying, “Yes,” and then another knock.

Clip 4: Mike asks if the Zodiac Killer’s spirit knows someone he works with. There is a single knock, followed by what sounds like a male saying, “No.”

Clip 5: Cindy asks the spirits if the turnout feels different at night. At the 6 second mark, a male voice may be saying, “No.”

Clip 6: I have to ask the other investigators if this was one of us saying, “Oh, God,” as Chris and Laura tell the spirits that they don’t have our permission to follow us once we leave the location. The voice doesn’t sound familiar and it sounds like it’s right up on top of the recorder’s microphone.

Clip 7: This was recorded at the end of investigation. You’ll hear people talking in the background. Someone’s car engine starts and I tell the others to drive safely. At the 8 second mark, there is a possible EVP that may be saying, “Look what they did.”
